The values of the Program are: Knowledge, Education, Innovation and Quality Improvement

The 20th cohort of the Certificate Course in Laboratory Quality Management (LQM) successfully finished the 22 week-long course on June 17, 2022. In addition to 26 Canadian participants, we were also joined by 19 international participants, all laboratory professionals from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, India, Trinidad and Tobago, and United States.

The goal of the LQM certificate course is to provide current and professionally relevant information to professionals responsible for quality management in the laboratory. The course achieves this through its structured curriculum delivered by diverse faculty, and by provoking conversation and discussion about laboratory quality foundations, challenges, and solutions for improvement.

LQM story begins in 2003

The LQM certificate course was created by Dr. Michael Noble in 2003 to meet the educational needs of medical laboratory quality managers. The course has been an enormous success thanks to sustained support over the years from Dr. Noble, several module mentors, and from the long-standing Program Coordinator, Ms. Maggie Ma.

Where we are today

As of this year, the program has graduated more than 542 students (98% graduation rate). In addition to Canada, participants have enrolled from 23 countries around the world and include physicians, medical residents, technologists, newly designated quality managers and team members, laboratory managers and directors, and research team leaders. Course evaluation surveys posted throughout the course indicate the positive value that the participants continue to gain from the course. Over the years, we have gained immense insight into the impact of online interactive courses in continuing education for working professionals.

The Laboratory Quality Management certificate course continues to have strong support from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Management, and enters a change in recent leadership by the new Program Director, Dr. Lucy A. Perrone, who joined the faculty in March as holder of the Donald B Rix Professorship in Laboratory Quality Dr. Perrone looks to continue the course’s success and grow the impact of the Program Office by expanding its educational offerings for laboratory professionals. This includes the goal of increasing enrollment numbers for the LQM course, and developing new online courses which will continue to target both a Canadian and global audience.
