VGH New Staff
Peter W. Schutz, MD, PhD
Clinical Assistant Professor
Staff Neuropathologist at VGH
Short bio:
I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Cambridge, my medical degree from the University of Vienna and a PhD in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from the University of British Columbia. After two years in medical genetics at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, I returned to UBC and completed specialist training in Neuropathology, followed by a fellowship in Neuromuscular Pathology at the UCL Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London UK. I am a staff neuropathologist at VGH with special interest in myopathology and a lead role for the VGH Muscle Lab. My research has focussed on inflammatory myopathies and I see considerable potential to pursue this further at UBC. Outside work I spend most of my time with my family of four. I enjoy skiing, good music, and a good book.
Sophia Wong, MD, FRCPC, MBA
Clinical Assistant Professor
Medical Biochemist at VGH
Short bio:
I am a medical biochemist at Vancouver General Hospital with interests in medical education, laboratory quality and test utilization. I grew up in North Vancouver and completed my undergraduate, medical, and postgraduate training at the University of British Columbia (UBC). I am the Physician Lead for Pre- and Post-Analysis (PPA) at Vancouver Coastal Health laboratories, and in this capacity my focus is to maximize efficiency and reduce errors in these two critical phases of the total laboratory testing process. My other interest is education – I love spending time with students and am currently the Course Coordinator for PATH 406 Clinical Chemistry and the Program Director for the UBC Medical Biochemistry Residency Training Program.

I joined the Department of Pathology at Vancouver General Hospital and the University of British Columbia in September 2017. I have a special interest in characterizing melanocytic tumors at the molecular level and my basic science studies focus on melanoma development, mechanisms of metastasis and response to therapy.
Lawrence Lee, MD FRCPC
Clinical Assistant Professor
Vancouver General Hospital
Short bio:
I was born and raised in Vancouver. I spent six years completing a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Engineering at the University of Toronto. I returned to my hometown for medical school where I met the love of my life, wife, and mother of our 3 year old daughter. During medical school, I grew tired of life on the wards but was immediately drawn to the sophistication, lifestyle and people of pathology. I completed my Anatomical Pathology residency at UBC in 2017 and was fortunate to be recently hired at VGH as a staff pathologist. I currently have a generalized practice but I also oversee quality assurance of the immunohistochemistry lab. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking for my family and frequenting Science World and the aquarium with my daughter.
Yury Sheykin, MD
Hematopathologist and General Pathologist at Vancouver General Hospital
Short bio:
I moved to Vancouver from Boston just a few months ago, in August of 2017. A general pathologist by training, I completed hematopathology and molecular pathology fellowships and now I practice hematopathology at the Vancouver General Hospital. The plan is also to start looking at molecular pathology cases in due time. I enjoy clinical service work, teaching and research, but I always remember that there is life outside work and try to use every chance I get to pursue numerous extracurricular activities: travelling, exhibits, performances, ballroom dancing, tennis, hiking, opera, sailing, gym workouts, biking, reading, learning languages, or just bumming around coffee shops. It doesn't get any better than doing all of those with friends and family!
Marthe Kenny Charles, MD
Clinical Instructor
Medical Microbiologist at Vancouver General Hospital
Short bio:
I was born in Montréal, and decided that I would become a microbiologist at the age of 7 reading a book about Louis Pasteur. I graduated from Université de Montreal with a Bachelor Degree in microbiology and immunology (‘06), a Masters degree in microbiology and a Medical degree (‘10). Hearing the calling from the beautiful lands of the west, I went on to do my residency in Edmonton, Alberta. I completed my training in 2016 and am now a certified Medical Microbiologist and an Infectious Diseases specialist. When not in the laboratory or at the bedside of a patient, I enjoy long hikes, skating, dancing salsa or reading the most recent bestseller.
Lien Hoang, MD
Clinical Instructor
Anatomic Pathologist at Vancouver General Hospital
Short bio:
I’m a Vancouver native, growing up in East Vancouver and attending the renowned Britannia High School. While in high school, I was in the school choir and also a gang member. Maintaining a successful gang/life balance, I did graduate from high school and went on to UBC for undergraduate and and medical school and residency training. The bright lights of Manhattan then beckoned and I did a fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY. I now practice surgical pathology at VGH with an emphasis on gynecological pathology. BTW – I stole the bear that appears with me in the picture. I don’t want anyone to get the wrong impression; do not ever, under any circumstances, mess with me!!
Andrew Shih, MD
Transfusion Medicine specialist, Vancouver General Hospital
Short bio:
I grew up in Saskatchewan and after medical school in Saskatoon, Internal Medicine in London Ont, and Hematology/Transfusion Medicine in Hamilton, I received special Royal College certification in small town/rural medicine. I now find myself in Vancouver, practicing Transfusion Medicine in Vancouver Coastal Health, and enjoying membership in the Thursday evening VGH pathology department running group. Little known fact about me: my mother worked as a blood banker, and as a consequence I attended blood bank summer camp for two weeks each summer, from ages 8-10.
