— Ivy Zhang, Human Resources Manager

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

I am currently pursuing my MBA, expecting graduation in 2024, which will allow me to deepen my knowledge in the various business areas and make meaningful connections with my peers from other fields.

What’s your go-to productivity trick?

Making a checklist at the beginning of my day always helps me stay on track as it clarifies what things or activities must be done for the day and allows me to allocate my time more efficiently. The satisfaction of checking things off my list is also a great motivator!

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I am an early bird.

How do you prefer to start your day? How do you wind down after work?

A morning jog definitely sets the right tone for the rest of my day. It is hard to commit to though and I am trying to keep it a daily routine. I like to wind down with some TV, a book, or socialization with friends.

What energizes you at work?

Knowing that I am doing my best to support the staff, faculty, and students keeps me motivated and energized. My interactions with colleagues also makes my days more fun and enjoyable.

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?

I really enjoy reading or doing outdoor activities in my downtime.

What led you to this career?

Human Resources was an attractive career path because I really enjoy working with and supporting the people in my organization to perform and achieve their best.

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

My mother has had tremendous influence on my work ethic because I’ve observed first hand her dedication and hard work in her jobs that has led her to great success. She is generous in offering her life and work experiences which has formed the basis to how I approach my work.

Have you ever had to “unlearn” something in your professional life? What was it?

One of the biggest things I’ve had to unlearn was that asking for help or questions meant incompetence. I’ve had to learn to truly trust and depend on my team and organization to create success and that the only dumb questions are ones you don’t ask because then you attempt to answer them yourself.

Welcome Ivy to our department! We're excited to have you on board and looking forward to your contributions. Your dedication to pursuing your MBA and your go-to productivity trick of making checklists are impressive. We hope you enjoy working with us and feel energized by the collaboration with our team.
