Congratulations to Dr. Julie Irving on her appointment as Regional Associate Academic Department Head for the Island Health

Dr. Irving is a subspecialty Gynecological Pathologist at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, and a Clinical Associate Professor in the UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. After completion of Anatomical Pathology residency at UBC, and a fellowship in Gynecological Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the Hospital de la Santa Creu I Sant Pau in Barcelona, Spain, Dr. Irving was on staff at the Vancouver General Hospital until 2007 when she re-located to Victoria with her family. She is a Consultant in Gynecological Pathology with the BC Cancer Agency, and an Associate Member of the UBC Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Her current role as the Discipline-Specific Site Leader in Pathology for the UBC Faculty of Medicine involves oversight and co-ordination of Anatomical Pathology resident electives as well as medical student small group and teaching sessions for the Island Medical Program. Dr. Irving has authored or co-authored numerous book chapters including the WHO Classification of Female Genital Tumours and Blaustein’s Pathology of the Female Genital Tract, has published over 40 refereed articles, and served as an Editorial Board member of the International Journal of Gynecological Pathology for 14 years. Dr. Irving looks forward to her new role as the Island Health Authority Regional Associate Academic Department Head, and working with past and new colleagues in this exciting endeavor.

Congratulations to Dr. Michelle Wong on her appointment as Associate Academic Department Head for Fraser Health Authority

Dr. Michelle Wong is originally from Calgary and subsequently moved to British Columbia to complete a B.Sc. in Biopsychology at UBC, her medical undergraduate degree at UBC and her postgraduate residency training in Hematological Pathology also at UBC. She has worked in Fraser Health since 2008 and enjoys a varied comprehensive clinical practice. She has served in numerous administrative roles including Division Head, Regional Medical Director for Hematopathology and is currently the Regional Medical Director for Transfusion Medicine. She is dedicated to and enjoys teaching medical students and residents sharing her love of Hematopathology! In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, gardening and spending time with her friends and family.

  • Dr. Ying Wang has won a Heart and Stroke New Investigator Award for a research project entitled: "Targeting efferocytosis to reduce risk of cardiovascular events". Funding period: July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025; faculty mentor for this award is Dr. Honglin Luo.
  • Congratulations to Dr. Cheryl, Wellington on receiving a new grant from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada for $291,488.

Research and awards funding opportunities

  • Faculty of Medicine is now accepting applications for this year’s New Faculty Research Award, valued at $10,000 per award maximum.

    Applicants must be in the first two years of their first full-time faculty appointment as Assistant Professor and higher, or a Clinical faculty appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor and higher in the UBC Faculty of Medicine. Previous awardees and applicants who have received $200,000 or more in Start Up Funds are ineligible for this opportunity. The funds may be used for research equipment, research supplies and/or research services (e.g. cost recovery payments to core equipment), and research support salaries (e.g. technical personnel). Big welcome to the new work learn students

We are pleased to welcome Lauren Rutherford, Riya Gandhi and Minh Anh Pham who have joined the pathology admin team for the summer term May 2 – Aug 31, 2022 as Work Learn students.

Lauren has just completed her 3rd year undergrad at UBC studying Health Sciences, and is looking to gain experience working in an office, and to find out more about medical education and public health.

Riya is going into her second-year and is excited to learn about science communication and working in administration.

Minh Anh is in her third year of completing a Bachelor of International Economics (BIE).
