In addition, he is the Chief Medical Laboratory Officer for Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS). He has previously held roles of Medical Director, Department Head, and Executive Medical Director within Island Health
'PLMS, Partnerships, and Value in Lab Medicine: the Challenges and Opportunities in Advancing Service Coordination in BCβs Lab Environment'
Learning objectives: 1) Understand the governance structure, partnerships, and select projects of PLMS; 2) Learn the key areas of pressure facing lab systems in BC today; 3) Identify opportunities to assess value of laboratory medicine.

RESEARCH FUNDING NEWS
Dr. Zu-hua Gao has been awarded $150,000 by the John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) for his project titled "Hydrogen-based adhesive artificial mucosa (HAAM): a novel versatile platform for cancer therapy and prevention." The JELF grant, a vital resource for advancing research excellence, supports institutions in attracting and retaining top-tier researchers.

HONORING SUCCESS: RECENT POSTDOC AND GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS
We are proud to announce that Dr. Zhenwei Ma, a Postdoctoral Fellow from Gao Lab, Integrative Oncology, and Dr. Anne-Sophie Archambault, from Dr. Ramon Klein Geltink's Lab have been awarded the prestigious 2023 CIHR Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. This award recognizes their outstanding research potential and provides significant funding to support their future endeavors in science and academia. Join us in congratulating them on their remarkable achievement.
Busra Turgu, a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Sorensen's Lab, has been honored with the 2023/2024 UBC Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. This prestigious award is a testament to her exceptional contribution to teaching and learning at UBC, distinguishing her among over 2000 Teaching Assistants. Congratulations, Busra, on this remarkable achievement and your commitment to educational excellence!
Fang Fang Li from the Prystajecky and Jassem Labs, and Renying Cai from Dr. Hélène Côté's Lab, have received the Canada Graduate Scholarship Doctoral (CGS-D) from CIHR. These awards are part of Canada's investment in nurturing research talent. Congratulations to Fang and Renying for their achievements and best wishes for their research endeavors.

RECENT PUBLICATIONS
Dr. Poul Sorensen, Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC, co-authored a study that identifies how proteins in Ewing sarcoma and prostate carcinoma aid in immune system evasion. This research, detailed in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, shows these proteins reactivate dormant DNA, leading to RNA production that suppresses immunity. This insight could impact the treatment and diagnosis of these cancers.

Dr. Jayachandran Kizhakkedathu, Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC, contributed to a groundbreaking study on blood group conversion. The paper, published in Nature Communications , presents the successful ex-vivo conversion of blood type A kidneys to type O using enzymes from Avivo Biomedical Inc. This collaboration with the University of Cambridge and other experts demonstrates a significant advance in organ transplantation, potentially overcoming the ABO blood type barrier and enhancing organ allocation efficiency.

The Pathology Vernon Group has released a paper examining the prevalence of placental maldevelopment in fetuses with open spina bifida (SB) compared to those without congenital anomalies. The study highlights associations between placental characteristics and genetic pathways, enhancing our understanding of spina bifida's complexities.
