EXCITING DEPARTMENTAL UPDATES

 

  • Warm Welcome to Lisa Scully!
    Lisa Scully will be joining us on October 3rd as the Senior Program Assistant for the Medical Undergraduate Electives and Residency Program. Having previously collaborated with her at VGH, we're excited to have her on board. Lisa will focus on:
    • Medical undergraduate electives coordination
    • Coordination of PATH 722 series
    • Pediatric AFC fellowship program support
    • Residency programs support with Shelley and Mayumi
    • Supporting Sneha Dabgar with department initiatives
    Lisa will be stationed on the 10th floor of Diamond and can be reached at lisa.scully@ubc.ca and pathology.medundergrad@pathology.ubc.ca for undergraduate electives.
    Our gratitude extends to Mayumi and Sneha Dabgar for their interim roles in supporting the Medical Undergraduate Electives and PATH 722.

  • Congratulations Sneha Dabgar!
    Sneha has officially assumed the role of Executive Assistant in our department. Among her many responsibilities, she will be organizing PathDay, managing the Department Head’s calendar, supporting key department committees, and serving as the primary contact for obtaining signatures on RPIFs.   • Leadership Transition in the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science Program
    Thank you to Dr. Amanda Bradley for her ten years of services as the Director for the Bachelor or Medical Laboratory Science program. Welcome to Yuko Ikegami Lee who is the new Associate Director for the Bachelor or Medical Laboratory Science program, filling in the leadership role that Amanda has provided.   • Transfusion Medicine Leadership Change
    Dr. Andrew Shih stepped down as the Program Director of the UBC Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Transfusion Medicine Diploma Program as of June 30, 2023. We've witnessed the program thrive under Dr. Shih's leadership, achieving both national and international acclaim. Our appreciation goes out to Dr. Shih for his remarkable commitment and service.

    Succeeding Dr. Shih, Dr. Youness Elkhalidy took on the role of Interim Program Director of the Transfusion Medicine Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Diploma Program from July 1, 2023. As a Clinical Assistant Professor, a staff Hematopathologist at Surrey Memorial Hospital, and a recent graduate, Dr. Elkhalidy brings a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm to the position. We're excited about the direction he'll take the program in and are grateful for his willingness to step into this significant role.

We are happy to announce Dr. Zu-hua Gao's new role as the Program Medical Director for Provincial Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, effective June 1.

Correction to Last Week's Announcement: CONTRIBUTORS TO THE 2023 FACULTY OF MEDICINE CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR COMPETITION

 

We'd like to correct an oversight in our previous bulletin. Alongside Dr. Aly Karsan and Dr. Jayachandran Kizhakkedathu, Dr. Corree Laule also served on the adjudication committee for the 2023 Faculty of Medicine Canada Research Chair Competition. Their collective expertise and dedication played a crucial role in the assessment process. We extend our gratitude for their commitment and are confident in the potential of the selected candidates to advance Medicine and Life Sciences. Thank you

    We're excited to highlight a recent publication co-edited by Dr. Corree Laule. Check out the book titled "Imaging Neuroinflammation" that delves into the intricacies of neuroinflammation and its imaging.

  • Spotlight on Groundbreaking Research in Breast Cancer Radiation
    Dr. Nielson serves as the co-senior author, and Dr. Kos from our department is recognized as a significant contributing author. This study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine on Aug 24, 2023, delves deep into advancements related to breast cancer radiation, offering insights that promise to shape future medical practices.

  • We're proud to spotlight Dr. Lucy A. Perrone's significant contribution to the upcoming book, "Modernizing Global Health Security to Prevent, Detect, and Respond." Dr. Perrone collaborated with esteemed professionals from Fondation MΓ©rieux, the World Health Organization, and more, leading the chapter on laboratory systems strengthening. This monumental effort, which spans over three years, involved the expertise of over 100 international experts and the dedication of 20 Emory MPH students.
