NEW PATH RESEARCH TOOL AVAILABLE
We announce the launch of our new tool for exploring academic faculty research interests and biobanks. This resource provides information on biobanks held by our Academic Faculty members, research interests, available equipment, and supervision. This project, part of our strategic plan, was completed ahead of the 2024 target.

DR. ALI BASHASHATI AND DR. SAM APARICIO RECEIVE 2024 FOM DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

HISTORIC COLLABORATION AGREEMENT SIGNED
The UBC Faculty of Medicine and ANU Health and Medicine have signed a historic agreement to improve the health and wellness of Indigenous populations. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Dr. Dermot Kelleher of UBC and Dr. Russell Gruen of ANU in Vancouver, BC.
Dr. Kelleher emphasized the significance of this collaboration to improve health outcomes for Indigenous peoples and to honor their traditions and rights. Read more about the agreement and its goals π Read More

DR. SORENSEN'S BREAKTHROUGH IN CANCER RESEARCH
Dr. Sorensen, a leader in translational medicine, has collaborated with researchers from BC Cancer, the Vancouver Prostate Centre, the University of Toronto, and the Technical University of Munich to uncover mechanisms used by cancer cells to propagate disease. This research highlights the benefits of collaborative science in advancing diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities. Read the full article π here.

DR. ALI BASHASHATI'S BREAKTHROUGH IN ENDOMETRIAL CANCER DETECTION
Dr. Ali Bashashati and his team at UBC Faculty of Medicine have discovered a high-risk form of endometrial cancer and a new testing method using AI and biomedical imaging. This can identify high-risk patients for more effective treatment. Read the full findings in Nature Communications π here.

Several of our faculty members have received 2024 Discovery Grants:

Dr. Ying Wang (Pathology and Lab Medicine): Cell-cell and cell-microenvironment interactions maintain tissue homeostasis of the cardiovascular system.
- Dr. Jayachandran Kizhakkedathu (Pathology and Lab Medicine): Novel Biomaterials Design Concepts in the Development of Immunomodulating Materials and Bioactive Surfaces.
- Dr. Calum MacAulay (Pathology and Laboratory Medicine): Co-applicant Dr. Renelle Myers (Medicine) for Angular contrast multimodal optical imaging for lung cancer assessment.
These grants, part of the NSERC 2024 Discovery Research Program, support innovative research projects. Read more

Dr. Aly Karsan has received a 2024 Translational Award Program grant for his project, βNon-genetic mechanisms of therapy resistance in myeloid cancers.β The grant amounts to $800,000.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR UBC CLINICAL FACULTY MENTORING PROGRAM
Applications are now open for the UBC Clinical Faculty Mentoring Program, recruiting mentees and mentors for the fall 2024 start. This year, the program will focus on 1-1 relationships and link participants to existing faculty development and coaching education within UBC departments.

UBC HEALTH DATA ANALYTICS MICRO-CREDENTIAL PROGRAM INFORMATION SESSION
We are having an information session for the UBC Micro-certificate in Health Data Analytics: Opportunities and Applications. It is a part-time technical program developed by the UBC Department of Medicine and UBC Data Science Institute, in consultation with health sector leaders from government, academia and industry. It provides learners with career development and upskilling opportunities to fill the data literacy gap in our evolving data-driven health sector.

NEW βEDI IN RESEARCHβ ONLINE COURSE AVAILABLE
A new βEDI in Researchβ online course is now available through UBC Workplace Learning. This course supports faculty, staff, and students in implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion practices in research.
The EDI in Research course responds to actions outlined in UBC’s Action Plan for EDI in Research and aligns with the university’s Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism (StEAR) Framework. In addition, the EDI in Research Resource Library website continues to support researchers seeking academic, peer-reviewed, practitioner guides and other media as a curated collection of resources available to all members of the UBC community and beyond.

VCHRI RECEIVES 2024 GOLD QUILL AWARD
VCHRI has been honored with the international 2024 Gold Quill Award of Excellence by IABC in the category of Communication for Special and Experiential Events.
