2026 Summer Student Fellowship recipients announced

We are pleased to announce the recipients of this year's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Summer Student Fellowships. Our program continues to support undergraduate trainees in gaining hands-on research and clinical experience under the mentorship of our faculty.

  • Kirsten Schulz (MD undergraduate) will work with Dr. Ying Wang on vascular biology research, building on prior experience in endothelial cell biology and translational research.
  • Satvika Suresha (BMLSc) will join Dr. Jay Kizhakkedathu's lab to study endothelial glycocalyx reconstruction and immune-mediated vascular injury, gaining experience in polymer-based therapeutics and cell-based assays.
  • Victoria Chan (BMLSc) will work with Dr. Vilte Barakauskas and Dr. Jake Cosme on clinical assay validation to improve diagnostic testing and laboratory workflows.

We look forward to following their work this summer and to their presentations at Pathology Day.

Clinician Scientist Career Acceleration Program (CSCAP) – Call for Applications

We are inviting you to apply to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine’s Clinician Scientist Career Acceleration Program (CSCAP).

The CSCAP program is for laboratory clinicians from any branch of PALM or accredited clinical scientists recruited and paid by the health authorities. Its purpose is to help provide term limited protected research time to enable them to build that aspect of their career.

The program is motivated by the acknowledgment that many individuals of great academic potential have been recruited in to clinical positions across BC. The program is designed for individuals who have demonstrated that they have potential as researchers, from any of the province’s health authority laboratories that support research.

The Department will provide $50,000 per year and per individual for a five year term. Should the candidate have demonstrated success in the five years of the funded program, the clinical and academic departments will look towards the ongoing compensation costs for the individual and building a stronger relationship with the department.

We are now accepting applications for this program until April 13, 2026, with results to be announced before July 5th.

Applications and queries about the program can be submitted to Genevieve.macmillan@ubc.ca.

Dr. Katey Enfield receives Terry Fox New Investigator Award

Congratulations to Dr. Katey Enfield, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, on receiving a 2026 Terry Fox New Investigator Award.

Dr. Enfield's research focuses on understanding why immunotherapy is effective for only some lung cancer patients. By studying tumour–immune interactions and identifying new biomarkers, her work aims to improve how treatments are selected and applied.

This national program supports early-career researchers as they establish their labs and advance new approaches to cancer prevention, detection and treatment.
