Join us Friday, September 5 at 12:00 noon for a presentation by Dr. Sanjay Patel, Associate Professor of Hematopathology at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Talk title: “Spatial Mapping of Human Hematopoiesis at Single Cell Resolution in Aging and Myelodysplasia”
The session will introduce bone marrow niches, highlight multiparametric in situ tissue imaging, and discuss spatial features of hematopoiesis in aging and myelodysplasia.

Dr. Philipp Lange — new leadership role
We are pleased to share that Dr. Philipp Lange, Associate Professor, has been appointed Director, Childhood Diseases Research at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, effective September 15, 2025. In this role, he will coordinate research across BCCHR and UBC FoM, foster collaboration among investigators, and serve on the BCCHR Research Leadership Council. Congratulations to Dr. Lange.

Dr. Christopher Lowe — served as a PGME Internal Review surveyor
We thank Dr. Christopher Lowe, Clinical Professor, for his contribution as a surveyor in the Radiation Oncology review during the 2024–25 PGME Internal Review, an important part of the accreditation process.

Grynspan D. (Clinical Assistant Professor), with colleagues, published “Placental Morphology and Metabolomic Profile in Uncomplicated Metabolically Healthy Obese Pregnancy” in Biomedicines (2025), 13(9), 2149. Read more.
A study examining how placental structure and metabolite profiles are affected in metabolically healthy obesity, enhancing understanding of pregnancy adaptations.

Kaur S. (Clinical Assistant Professor), with colleagues, published “Recommendations for the integration of standardized quality indicators for glucose point-of-care testing” in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, 2025;63(10):1965–1973. Read more.
This paper proposes standardized quality measures for point-of-care glucose testing to improve accuracy and reliability in clinical settings.

FoM Postdoc Peer Mentorship Program — Applications Open
The Faculty of Medicine is now accepting applications for the 2025–26 Postdoctoral Peer Mentorship Program.
- 10-month program (September–June)
- Monthly peer mentorship circle meetings
- Professional development, social events, and wellness workshops
- Virtual/Hybrid delivery
- Receive a letter of recognition and a certificate upon completion

2027 CFI Innovation Fund — UBC Internal Timelines
UBC has released the internal timelines in preparation for the anticipated 2027 CFI Innovation Fund competition. Key upcoming dates include:
- Dec 1, 2025: UBC Internal Expression of Interest (EOI)
- May 4, 2026: UBC internal deadline for full internal proposal (with budget, CVs, etc.)
- July 6, 2026: UBC internal decision — applicants notified
- Oct 2026: CFI deadline to submit Notice of Intent (NOI)
- Feb 2027: CFI deadline to submit proposals (expected)
- Nov 2027: CFI Board decision
Dates are tentative and subject to change as CFI releases new information. For early support or to request a Test-Your-Concept session, please consult UBC’s Innovation & Partnerships Office.

Baby Visit
Our Residency Program Assistant, Mayumi Shimada, welcomed her second baby in June and visited us on Tuesday, August 26 at 10:30 a.m. We enjoyed meeting the newest member of her family and sharing a few photos from the visit.

Kiwibots on Campus! 🤖
With back-to-school underway, UBC is rolling out some surprise guests at the Vancouver campus. Meet Grey, Kelly, and Robson — three AI-powered “Kiwibots” spending September at the UBC Bookstore. Kelly is answering student questions, while Grey and Robson are handing out treats. Their skills and tasks will evolve as they learn more.
This pilot project, the first of its kind on a Canadian university campus, is part of an innovation partnership between UBC and Rogers Communications exploring AI, 5G, and human-robot interaction.
