Dr McLean’s Service Announcement

The service for Dr. McLean will be held on Saturday, September 24, at 2 pm at Fairview Presbyterian Church, 2725 Fir st. (Right on the corner of West 11th Avenue and Fir Street (one block west of Granville Street).
It will be followed by a reception at the church.

Dr. McLean played an important role in the creation of the BMLSc Program in the early 1980s. He coordinated and taught the course PATH 327 Medical Microbiology for many years and continued to give lectures in the course for 22 years after retiring in 1991.

In 1992, an academic prize was established in his honour and is awarded annually to the graduating BMLSc student with the highest standing in PATH 327. Dr. McLean personally presented the prize to the winner every year up until 2018.

Dr. McLean maintained his connection to the BMLSc Program through weekly treks to UBC, most often by bicycle. We looked forward to his visits to the BMLSc offices and his updates on his many travels, his wife Joyce’s hand-knitted items, which she donated to Regent College and he delivered, his upcoming publications, or the next virology conference he was off to.

Dr. McLean’s passion for his work and his enjoyment of teaching was apparent. He was a vibrant, dedicated, genuine and kind man, a teacher and an academic who showed us all how to be our best selves in work and in life. We will miss him greatly.
