Government of Canada Impact+ Research Chairs Program
The Government of Canada has launched the Impact+ Research Chairs and Impact+ Emerging Leaders programs to support the recruitment of exceptional international researchers. These programs provide major funding for universities to attract established researchers and early career leaders who currently reside outside Canada. Applications will align with federal priority areas such as digital technologies, health and biotechnology, clean technology, environment and climate resilience, and other national strategic themes.
UBC will participate in the upcoming two intake cycles, with application deadlines in March and June 2026. Faculty members are encouraged to identify potential international candidates and invite them to register their interest.

Congratulations to Dr. Poul Sorensen – Recipient of the 2025 alumni UBC Research and Innovation Award
We are pleased to share that Dr. Poul Sorensen, OBC, BSc’80, MD’84, PhD’90, Professor in the
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Distinguished Scientist at BC Cancer, has received the
2025 alumni UBC Research and Innovation Award.
We congratulate Dr. Sorensen on this well-deserved recognition and celebrate his contributions to research, clinical
impact and mentorship within our department.

Congratulations to Dr. Michelle Wong
We are pleased to share that Dr. Michelle Wong, Clinical Professor in our department, has been elected to the Faculty of Medicine’s Clinical Appointment, Reappointment and Promotion Committee (FCARP). This is an important leadership role within the Faculty, and we are grateful for her commitment to academic service.
We congratulate Dr. Wong on this achievement and thank her for her continued contributions to our community.

Congratulations to Dr. Añuli Uzozie
Dr. Añuli C. Uzozie completed UBC’s
UBC’s International Program for the Scholarship of Educational Leadership
and was among the 2025 graduating cohort.
Dr. Uzozie was awarded a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) seed grant to support a teaching and learning research project on course delivery and evaluation in the BMLSc program.

New Publication from Dr. Shadgan’s Lab
We are pleased to share that a new paper from Dr. Babab Shadgan,
Associate Member in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine,
has been published in Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio).
The study is first-authored by Amir Rad, who recently completed his MSc
in our department.
The publication highlights important findings from the Implantable Biosensing Laboratory.

Internal Competition: V Foundation Barrier Breaker Award
UBC is anticipating an invitation to nominate one candidate for the V Foundation’s Barrier Breaker Award, which supports adult cancer research in either the Translational or V Scholar (early career) stream. The program provides $800,000 USD over four years and replaces the former Women Scientist Innovators grant.
Interested faculty are asked to prepare internal nomination materials. The internal deadline is January 16, 2026. Additional program details are available on the V Foundation page below.

Internal Competition: Ono Pharma Foundation Chemical Biology Initiative
UBC has been invited to nominate up to two candidates for the Ono Pharma Foundation’s Chemical Biology funding initiative. This opportunity provides $900,000 USD to support early- and mid-career researchers (within 15 years of first academic appointment) pursuing innovative projects with potential to advance new treatment solutions.
VPRI will coordinate the internal selection process. The internal deadline is January 16, 2026. Program details are available below.

UBC Launches Mental Health and Substance Use Micro-certificate
UBC has launched a new Mental Health and Substance Use Micro-certificate to support frontline and community workers who encounter mental-health and substance-use crises in public-facing settings. The program provides foundational skills to respond safely, communicate effectively, and connect individuals to appropriate services.
The online, self-paced program is designed for people working in shelters, schools, community centres, libraries, youth services, settlement services, security, and other public-facing roles. It also emphasizes trauma-informed and anti-oppressive approaches.

2026 Pathology Grant Application Practicum (PGAP)
Sent on behalf of Dr. Cheryl Wellington, Professor & Vice Chair Research, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine
A hands-on workshop focused on developing competitive grant proposals. The practicum will conclude with the award of two collaborative seed grants ($15,000 each). Sessions are a mix of in-person and virtual formats (2 hours each).
