FLAG LOWERING CEREMONY
HONORING DR. NAVEENA SINGH

The University of British Columbia will be lowering the BC, Musqueam, and UBC flags at the East Mall Entrance and Plaza of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre on January 6th in memory of Dr. Naveena Singh, who passed away on October 5, 2023. This gesture is a tribute to Dr. Singh's contributions to our department and community. We welcome all department members to join in remembering and honoring Dr. Singh.

SEED GRANT WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT

πŸ“’ Join us for a hands-on workshop, led by Dr. Cheryl Wellington, Professor and Vice Chair Research of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia. 🏫

This dynamic session will provide a deep dive into the art of crafting competitive grant proposals. βœοΈπŸ’‘ The program will culminate in the awarding of two collaborative seed grants, each valued at $15,000. πŸŒ±πŸ’°

Workshop sessions will be a blend of in-person and virtual formats, spanning two hours each, and will cover the essential elements of constructing a compelling research grant proposal. πŸ–₯οΈπŸ“Š

πŸ”The Call for Proposals for the Summer 2024 session (May 1 - August 31, 2024) will open from January 3 - January 22, 2024; 11:59PM PST (see updated timeline on Work Learn’s Faculty & Staff Website). A formal announcement will be circulated in early January 2024.

Work-Integrated Learning Awards – Nominate your Work Learn student
Do you know an outstanding Work Learn, WL IURA or NSERC USRA student? Nominate them to Student-of-the-year work integrated awards from ACE-WIL  and CEWIL Awards  ($500 - $1,000). Both Work Learn Summer and Winter students are eligible, so long as they have worked between January to December 2023. This is a great opportunity to recognize your student for the work they have accomplished and the contributions they are making to your team and beyond. Work Learn will be accepting nomination forms till Monday, January 15, 5:00PM PST.  Email work.learn@ubc.ca to request the nomination forms.

Attend UBC’s townhall on strategic equity and anti-racism (StEAR) progress

The Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism (StEAR) Roadmap for Change was released in June 2023 to guide implementation efforts and evaluate progress of equity and anti-racism priorities. During the upcoming townhall, we will share key updates and results of our assessment of progress of 135 institutional-level actions identified in the StEAR roadmap.

Executive sponsors and senior leaders will participate to present and/or answer questions from campus community members.

Your participation in this townhall is invaluable as we collectively work to build a more equitable and inclusive campus, and I encourage you to share this opportunity among your networks.
