New Faculty Appointment:
Dr. Añuli Uzozie to Lead BMLSc Program

We are very pleased that Dr. Añuli Uzozie has accepted the offer of Assistant Professor of Teaching and Director of the BMLSc program. Dr. Uzozie, who will join the Department May 1, 2025, obtained her Bachelor of Technology in Biochemistry from the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Nigeria in 2004. In 2010, she received her Master of Science in Applied Biomolecular Technology from the University of Nottingham in England. Dr. Uzozie obtained her Doctorate of Natural Sciences in Cancer Biology from the University of Zürich, Switzerland in 2014. Following the completion of her studies, Dr. Uzozie spent three years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland. From 2017-2021, she held an appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She also served as a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the UBC Biology Program during 2020. Since 2021, Dr. Uzozie has been a full-time faculty instructor in the Department of Biology at Langara College.

New PI Focus:
Dr. Katey Enfield Analyzes Spatial Interactions in Lung Cancers To Better Understand the Immune Response

Dr. Katey Enfield, Assistant Professor, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UBC, has established a new laboratory at BC Cancer focusing on spatial interactions in lung cancer. Her research examines how cancer cells interact with surrounding tissues and immune cells, particularly B cells, to understand why immunotherapy treatments are effective in some patients but not others. The second annual UBC Life Sciences Symposium will be held on April 11, 2025 (9:00 am - 6:00 pm) at the Michael Smith Laboratories and Life Sciences Centre.

2025 Pathology Summer Student Research Program

Summer Student Research Program in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is offering 3 awards ($4,872 plus 4% vacation pay) for 8 weeks full-time or 16 weeks part-time research positions. Battling Bird Flu: Genome BC Funds Critical Research to Protect BC from Avian Influenza

Genome BC is funding new H5N1 research projects at BCCDC involving Dr. Linda Hoang, Clinical Professor, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UBC (Medical Director, BCCDC Public Health Laboratory and principal investigator of the HUB projects) and Dr. Shannon Russell, Clinical Assistant Professor, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UBC (Senior Scientist, BCCDC Public Health Laboratory). The projects aim to monitor viral mutations, develop early detection methods, and study transmission patterns of the H5N1 outbreak that has led to culling of over 8.5 million poultry in BC since 2022. We are pleased to announce an expansion of the Michael A. Noble Family Awards in Laboratory Quality for PathDay May 30th, 2025. Building on the success of previous years, we are excited to extend the awards program to include BMLSc students. This year's awards will include:

  • Graduate Student Poster Award
  • Resident Poster Award
  • NEW: BMLSc Student Poster Award
  • Book prize for the certificate in Lab Quality

Monetary awards for the poster competitions will range from $1,000 to $1,600. To be eligible for consideration, posters must clearly define quality and include strategies that address risk and the consequences of error. Submit your abstract through the PathDay abstract submission form → and select 'yes' in the "Apply for the Michael Noble Family Award" section.
