New Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar Awards

Congratulations to the following faculty members who have secured new MSHRBC Scholar Awards to support their innovative research:.

  • Dr. Ramon Klein Geltink – Project: The links between nutrient sensing, cell intrinsic metabolism and T cell function in immune-related diseases
    Total Award: $360,000 (2022–2027)
  • Dr. James Lan – Project: Implementation of a Canadian willingness to cross program: a strategy to increase access to kidney transplantation for highly sensitized patients
    Total Award: $450,000 (2021–2026)

These competitive Scholar Awards are designed to support early-career health researchers in developing leading-edge programs with high impact in BC and beyond.

Dr. Cheryl Wellington Featured in BrightFocus Expert Article

Dr. Cheryl Wellington was recently featured in a BrightFocus Foundation expert article discussing the link between intimate partner violence (IPV), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and Alzheimer’s disease risk in women.

In the piece, Dr. Wellington shares her research insights and highlights the urgent need for better detection and awareness of brain injuries in women affected by IPV.

Congratulations to Jennifer Cooper – VCHRI Top Doctoral Student

We’re proud to share that Jennifer Cooper, PhD student supervised by Dr. Cheryl Wellington, has been awarded the 2025 Top Graduating Doctoral Student Award by the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI)..

Jennifer was recognized for her outstanding research on blood biomarkers to help improve the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Her work analyzed over 4,000 blood samples from diverse Canadian populations and aims to make Alzheimer’s testing more accessible and accurate. Congratulations, Jennifer, on this well-deserved honour!

We’re happy to share that Dr. Alberto Delaidelli, former Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Poul Sorensen’s lab, has started a new chapter in his career as an AP/NP Resident at Mass General Brigham, Harvard Medical School. Congratulations, Dr. Delaidelli—we wish you all the best in your residency and future career!

Join the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at St. Paul's Hospital for HLI Research Day 2025!

New ARC Software Request Service Now Available

BC Advanced Research Computing (ARC) has launched a new Software Request service to support researchers using ARC Sockeye, UBC’s high-performance computing (HPC) cluster.

What's new:

  • A centralized Software Request Form for installation requests
  • Access to the ARC Software Catalog to see what’s already available
  • A dedicated ARC team managing software installation and support
  • A simplified and more user-friendly experience

This service is designed to make it easier for researchers to access the software they need. Please share with anyone in your team who may benefit.
